CSIRO Livestock Industries' scientists working at the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) in Geelong, Victoria, have made a major breakthrough in better understanding how Hendra spreads from infected horses to other horses and humans.
In this months edition I want to bring readers attention to a place many horse people are quite familiar with, the Echuca horse sales. Over the years hundreds of horses have gone through the sales in hopes of finding a forever home. Though this may give horses a second chance it doesn't change the fact that the condition some of these horses come to the yards in is appalling.
It has often been said that owning a horse is akin to digging a deep hole in the backyard and throwing in large sums of money, never to be seen again. Horse-crazy people, however, might say, "So what? What does it matter how much it costs as long as I have my horse?"

Here are some basic guidelines to help avoid disappointment when purchasing a horse advertised online, in the paper or a magazine. These guidelines have particular relevance to those buying “sight unseen” – whether the horse is interstate or overseas.
Rule Number One – if it seems “too good to be true” it probably is! Occasionally very good horses are sold at bargain prices. More often than not, however, the horse’s ability, health, experience etc have been over inflated in order to get a quick sale.
