Horse Training Takes Time ... Or Does It?

I just came back in today from training a horse by the name of Marchador. Iwas thinking about him after our session and I could not believe how far we have come together.

It has been so exciting working with him through the Waterhole Rituals™. Today, we were working on the last Ritual, which is Go Trot and Come Up. What you want here is that when you send your horse off, he runs away at top speed. Then you call him back, and he turns around and runs back as fast as he left. This is what I got today with Marchador. It was absolutely brilliant. He did it three times straight on his own. I did not ask for a fourth time. I was thrilled at where he is at this time in his life and the training he has done so far.

I’m not going to go into everything he does now but I do want to talk about how I started with him and how he used to be. When he came to me, he was very angry. He did not like people. He was in fact responsible for breaking both a woman’s arms. He would attack any horse that came near him. When he came here and went out in the paddock, he would go to the far end of it and stand there and just be really mad, aggressive and fearful. So how I got him to the point that he is at today is an amazing testament to the power of the Waterhole Rituals™.

Given how he was back then, the first Waterhole Ritual™ alone was so valuable. I spent probably three months with that horse not doing anything but sitting in his paddock and reading a book with him. What took place during that time was amazing, even the first time I did this with him. He realized pretty quickly that I didn’t want anything from him, I was just out there for his company and he was free to do exactly what he wanted. I was sitting in a chair and when he came up to me and started interacting. He was like a sweet, gracious child. He started to become a different horse, and I just let that relationship build for the first three months.

To show how powerful this process is, when you look at him today, you would say that he has been in training for a couple of years. Would you be surprised to hear then, that we have only been working together for a total of six months? So that three months of sitting in the chair and letting him interact with me and me not interact with him was time totally well spent as he got to have his relationship the way he wanted it. And I got to find out what a very kind and lovely horse he is.

So, my question to you is do you spend enough time with your horse? When was the last time you just hung out together? If you want to reward an animal, the best you can reward him is with companionship and so that is what I recommend you do with your horse.
