CharlesSturt University Masters Research student Jodie Smith is currently looking for Riders (and their Horse!) to takepart in her Masters Research Project.

Jodie is exploring the distribution of asymmetric responses in ridden horses.

The research will help to clarify the relationship between riders’ handedness (left or right handed) and asymmetry(unevenness / lop sidedness) in horses they ride.

Assessing horses through riders’ reports and determining the degree to which each participant is aware of their ownasymmetry will promote harmony at the horse-rider level.

The research aims to discover if we are inadvertently training a motor bias (teaching them to perform more to oneside than the other) in the horses we ride. This may provide critical information to assist with the health,welfare and training of horses in the future.

To find out how horses are affected by our handedness Jodie needs numerous participants from all equestriandisciplines to complete a 10 minute online survey.

Prior to the questionnaire, participants will also be invited to complete a non-compulsory observational componentthat will require observation of their horse. This will take additional time to complete. The information sheet(link below) provides further information to be read prior to starting the survey.

The only requirement of participants is that they are over 16 years of age and have ridden their horse for aperiod of 12 months or longer. They must use only one horse for the survey and complete the survey only once.
