The Path Of The Horse DVD
I think I have become really jaded about all the 'new' horse training methods 'out there'. At the end of the day Ican only listen to so many people telling me that they have the answer, the method that will give me astronger connection with my horses. I thought this might be one of those DVD's. Thankfully, it isn't.
There's a scene in the movie Michael Clayton where George Clooney parks his car in a country lane and walksup a hill to three horses. The scene is silent, the only communication is body language and he appears somehow tooffer himself to them. He appears to be asking them Who am I? What Am I? What do I do? At the end he nods asif they have given him the answer. The Path Of The Horse is a little like that scene.
Stormy May, professional trainer, instructor and equestrian judge wakes up one day to the realisation that she haslost her way with horses. She begins a quest to find the connection, sells her farm, gives up her career and takesoff on a journey to find her own answers.
Along the way she meets and learns from Klaus Ferdinand Hempfling, Alexander Nevzarov, Carolyn Resnick, LindaKohanov, Mark Rashid and Kim McElroy.
This is not a "training your horse" DVD - if anything it is a "training humans" DVD - for the horses already have itright.
It is a journey into the philosophies of these trainers, rather than their methods.
And it is the personal journey of Stormy May as we watch her unravel everything she thinks she knows about horses toend up no-one with nothing and then starts to rebuild her relationship with horses, her life with them, from theground up. There is a sense of deeply felt loss, and then wonder.
The DVD embodies that feeling you get when for a moment you are moving at one with your horse, no longer two beingsbut one creature, one mind, one body. That moment is pure freedom.
The Path Of The Horse is also filled with some pretty full on information - the experiments related to the pressureof the bit that I wrote about in Horse Control And The Bit, and newer information aboutsaddles and scientific studies into what they do to a horse's back.
There is also photo after photo of horses twisting their heads in pain as riders haul on their mouths. Something wesee every day and are desensitised to ... but when you see it here, photo after photo after photo it sinks in. Whatwe do to them.
The Path Of The Horse is a confronting documentary which challenges you to question what you think you know abouthorses.
In many ways this is a story about ourselves, about how we meet the rest of humanity and in what frame of mind wetackle our daily encounters, problems, frustrations.
It's a beautiful film, a great DVD if you want to find change, not just with your horses, but within your life as awhole.
