The pony in the picture shows typical signs of sweet itch, In severe cases like this one, the scabs and sores extend all the way down the mane along the back to the base of the tail and are also seen on the flanks belly and legs. Inset is a photograph of a typical response that occurs following an injection of Midge proteins. There is a small swelling in the area of skin that has been tested for sensitivity to midge extract in salt solution (square 2) compared to an area of skin injected with the salt solution alone (square 1).

This question was put to me one afternoon by a lady at pony club when I arrived to pick up my children. The story was a familiar one of a young pony that had been purchased in the winter months then suddenly developed the characteristic rubbing and weeping sores of sweet itch the following summer.

DIY Insect Repellants

With summer well and truly here I thought I'd put up a couple of fly-spray recipes that you can make at home. Insect repellents in the saddleries can be expensive, uneconomical (with two horses I will go through a 750 ml bottle in about two weeks) not to mention full of nasty chemicals and irritants. Most of these recipes take about five minutes to make up and are very no-fuss.

A mob that was passively trapped coming in for a feed of hay only three weeks later!

What is Brumby running? Not very much at all like the idealised scenes in the Man from Snowy River movie!
