Please be on the lookout for several scammers currently targeting HorseYard users. New information added!
For the latest information on internet scams, and to report scams, please go to the ACCC Scam Watch website (www.scamwatch.gov.au). You can also call them direct on 1300 302 502.
Initial enquiry emails that these scammers send usually say something like this:
"G'day Is the horse still up for sale? Cheers [name]"
If you respond to this enquiry they will send a further detailed response asking to pay by PayPal. A copy of this response is outlined further down this page.
Once you respond to the first enquiry (as above) the scammers will have your email address and can contact you directly. These messages will no longer be going through the HorseYard system.

This guy is getting particularly cunning. He has recently been telling people he was supposed to be removed off this list: "i am sorry for the hassle, i had an issue with a seller on horseyard whom i bought a float from and turned about to be a fraud he went ahead to report me to horseyard, though horse has clarified the issue and have apologized and have promised to erase my email within 48hours" - THIS IS NOT TRUE. There have been no such correspondence between HY and this person. He is based in Nigeria (we know this from his computer IP address). This is just another cunning attempt to win your trust and defraud you of your money.

These scammers have briefly been registered members of the site and have now been blocked from accessing their accounts. Please note that most of these scammers are based overseas (Nigeria, Ivory Coast, UK etc).
As above, once you respond to the first enquiry the scammers will have your email address and can contact you directly. These messages will no longer be going through the HorseYard system and we cannot prevent them from contacting you.
As soon as we become aware of these people we block their access. If you have been contacted by someone running a similar scam, who is not already on our list, please send us their email address and we will block them asap. By working together we can continue to discourage them!
This is a sample of what they are emailing:
"Thanks for the email,do let me know how much you
are willing to sell him to me . I will be paying with my paypal
account which is the safest online payment mode.so please do
reply me asap with your paypal account or send me a payment
request from your paypal account so i can effect payment to
you rightaway. You can easily open an account with paypal if
you don't have one at www.paypal.com.au its safe, simple and
reliable also do get back to me so we can arrange for pick up as
i will like him to be picked by my pick up agent due to the fact
that i am out of the country now on job duties so i will not be
able to come for an inspection, I await your reply."
Please do not respond to these emails.
The way the scam works is:
- Get you to agree to the sale and tell you they will pay by PayPal.
- They send you a fake PayPal email saying a deposit has been made to your PP account. These emails look very real, but they are fake.
- The scammer then says they have paid you an extra $800 to $1000 into your PayPal account and could you please wire it back to them via Western Union.
- Because you have seen the emails from "PayPal" you believe the money is there and many people will just withdraw money out of their regular bank account and wire it back via Western Union without logging into their PayPal account first to check if the money has actually been paid.
The following are running a fake "horse float for sale" or fake "horse for sale" scams. The float or horses for sale by these people do not exist or are advertised elswhere by legitimite owners for two or three times the price! They will attempt to get you to commit to buying the float or horse site unseen.
