Following an article in the Recorder last December about the lack of
facilities in Port Pirie for a Pony Club, Camille Mummery has been pro-active in aiming to
establish the John Pirie Community Equestrian Park.
Police officer Sonia Wellings, with 26 years riding experience, also saw a need for a
community equestrian park and has joined Mrs Mummery, who has worked as a project officer
and is an experienced horse rider, in this initiative.
The proposed sight is land on the western corner of Anzac and Goode Roads.
Officer Wellings said the equestrian park, which would be fenced off, would be a solution
for unlawful use of the land and hoon driving which has been a concern for the council.
This will be a multi-purpose equestrian park with a focus on being readily accessible to the
children in the district.
It also available for the whole community to use and enjoy in a safe environment.
It will facilitate the safe riding of their equine friends and could also be a base for a
pony club, an adult riding club and possibly a dressage club.
Having an equestrian park will encourage people in the community to be active and will also
help keep the young pony riders off the roads which proves to be very dangerous.
Interest in this facility is very high, therefore a community meeting is being held at the
Port Football and Community Sporting Club next week when a steering committee will be
elected.
This will be a community consultation to show Port Pirie that there is support for the horse
riding enthusiasts, recognising the need for an area they can call their home.
Horse handler Rhiannan Bee and partner Ron Oldenbeuving a Farrier from Adelaide who provide
a service for horse owners in Port Pirie and region think it is a fantastic idea that would
also centralize the work for vets and horse shoers.
Throughout Australia via the social network, Facebook, 150 supporters have shown interest
and Show Horse Council of SA are keen to run a show if the project goes ahead.
