Australia Day 2010 had a strange beginning for the Mahoney family when they
found a fibreglass pony had materialised in their arena overnight.
Two days later things started to get even stranger when they awoke to find the pony had
moved down the other end of the arena and was now wearing a fly veil.
Entering into the mystery game Mrs Mahoney decided to rug the “aged” 13hh pony.
Another two days went by and the family woke to find the pony gone, replaced by a four metre
fibreglass crocodile with the pony’s rug stuffed in its mouth.
The family are at a complete loss to explain the mysterious goings on in their arena, whose
usual inhabitant is their show horse McBeal.
When the pony first appeared Mrs Mahoney reported it to the local police station at Hastings
worried that a local business had apparently lost its mascot.
A few days later, the former owners of a Mornington Peninsula Mini Golf course, who wish to
remain anonymous, came forward to say that they thought the pony might be theirs as their
now-closed facility had been broken into and one of their mini golf course statues – a brown
pony – had been taken.
The thieves had sawn the pony off its concrete base at the lower legs. Around the same time
the croc also went missing.
While hugely amusing for most of us, this has not been a victimless crime. Apart from
property damage at the mini golf course, the owners’ 12 year old daughter was missing ‘her’
pony. It had been promised to her as a reward for so many hours spent at the mini golf
course while her parents worked when she was a child.
The girl has apparently been quite distressed by the damage done and loss of her favourite
mini golf icon.
Yesterday the Mahoneys woke to find that the pony had mysteriously reappeared ... this time
with a ransom note for the croc which has already been picked up by its owners.
“The pony reappeared Monday morning with his legs gaffa taped together, eyes gaffa taped,
and a garden gnome tied around the pony's neck,” said Senior Constable Logan of Hastings
Police.
“The garden gnome had a stocking over his head with the eyes cut out, like a balaclava, and
a ransom note saying ‘Give us back the croc or the gnome gets it.’”
Mrs. Mahoney immediately rang the mini golf course owners who came to pick up the
adventurous pony before another night went by.

The pony’s owners plan to reattach its lower legs and hooves. The pony’s
return will be celebrated with an official “repainting” ceremony during their daughter’s
birthday party in a few weeks time. The young girl is thrilled to have her friend home
again.
Police still do not know the identity of the person or people behind the mysterious
events.
